The Phoenicia Malta has been honoured in the Condé Nast Traveler Readers' Choice Awards 2024, maintaining its place in the top 10 hotels in Central and Southern Europe and among the top 20 in the rest of Europe.

The five-star hotel is the only property in Malta to feature once again in the esteemed top 10 list this year, alongside other luxury properties in Vienna, Budapest, Salzburg and Prague. It is also one of only four hotels in Europe to remain in the list from the previous year, reaffirming The Phoenicia Malta as a leading destination for luxury travellers.

Guarding the gates to Valletta is the imposing frame of The Phoenicia Malta. It has all the hallmarks of a classic five-star hotel: the sweeping entrance, the expansive lounge for afternoon tea, and of course, the uber-efficient Les Clefs d'Or concierge. But this 75-year-old hotel is no grand dame stuck in the past – there are plenty of modern touches too. Take the main restaurant, Contessa, where a retractable glass roof was installed in 2023. This addition turns the space into a conservatory in winter and an open-air terrace in summer. Southern Mediterranean dishes, such as its signature spaghettata pasta with garlicky gamberi rossi prawns, are served as a sharing plate while cocktails are stirred table-side by way of its chic drinks trolley.

Many have balconies overlooking the harbour, the carefully tended gardens or into Valletta, and all come with complimentary minibars stocked with soft drinks. Make time to explore those gardens – you’ll find an infinity pool at the end. There’s also a subterranean spa with a small lap pool where you can see a section of Valletta’s 16th-century bastion walls.
